Japanese Cosplay Halloween – Tokyo Decadance Halloween 2011

Here is some footage from last year’s Tokyo Decadance Halloween event that I never got around to editing at the time because I had just got my camera and didn’t know how to use it. I was late anyway to the event and ran out of battery but still some interesting shots.

This year’s event is at Christon Cafe in Shinjuku on October 20th starting at 11.

Tokyo Decadance at Fbar Roppongi

On June 25th I went to the Tokyo Youtube Gathering at the Sports Cafe in Roppongi. Got there late but got my butt kicked by a couple of Oolong Hi’s (or was it 4 or 5?) Tokyo Decadance that eclectic hodge-podge of Japanese underground subculture happened to be going on the same night a few blocks away so I donned my samurai armor (which got me a discount at the door) and took a couple of Youtubers over there after the Youtube meet-up.

We had a good time and saw some wild stuff which some of it can’t be shown here for the obvious reasons but take out word for it – it was wild! Youtubers in attendance: http://www.youtube.com/edtomorrow

Tokyo Decadance: White and Yellow – Japanese Earthquake/Tsunami Aid Event

Tokyo Decadance that wild melting pot of subcultures hosted its monthly event this March. Normally the March event is to celebrate White Day March 14th which is the opposite of Valentines. On Valentines, girls give boys presents and on White Day the boys return the favor.

This year however the day before the originally schedule event there was a massive earthquake 80 kilometers off the northeast coast of Japan which caused destructive tsunamis which wiped out whole towns and caused enormous destruction and loss of life along the northeast coast of the Tohoku region.

Tokyo Decadance was postponed for two weeks and renamed White and Yellow. White for the original White Day and Yellow for support of Japan. Yellow is a positive color in Japan. A percent of the party’s profit was donated to the Red Cross.

There wasn’t as many people out as usual events but there was still a good showing. Kaya was there singing a duet. We had great music played by DJs like Rina Nekko, we had a seppuku (ritual suicide) simulation with lightsaber, a lightsaber dual between an angel and a gaijin samurai, and as always cute sexy girls.

Another fun-filled Tokyo Decadance event with sexy sirens, wickedly wild witches, ghoulish goblins, devious devils, rollicking robots, newhalf ninja, vicious violinists, plundering pirates, alliterating *ssholes, and god knows what else for Halloween.

Also in attendance was Rolly Teranishi who performed at last year’s Halloween event. Here he sang two songs from the cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show in Japanese with a bit of English.

Rolly Teranishi was a member of the Japanese rock band Scanch before going solo. He’s a big fan of The Rocky Horror Picture Show and has played Dr. Frank-N-Furter in Japanese stage versions.

Hoichi the Earless(?) and Pretty Devil enjoy Tokyo Decadance

One of my favorite costumes at the event was the girl dressed up as Hoichi the Earless even though she still had her ears. This is from an old ghost story where a blind biwa player unknowingly played for the ghosts of a defeated samurai clan. In order to save him from eventual destruction, Buddhist priests covered his body in sacred texts but they forget to cover his ears. When a ghost came to fetch Hoichi, the sacred writing prevented him from seeing the biwa player save for his two ears which he ripped from Hoichi’s head.

Roving Ronin Report presents Tokyo Decadance

Here’s some clips from Tokyo Decadance a monthy dance event held in different clubs in Tokyo and around the world now.

I only got the chance to record one of the shows but I was able to get some glimpses of participants in all their get-up.

The website I posted on the vid is to the Amsterdam site. The tokyo one is under construction but you get a look at it here:

It’s also up for votes for airing on Current TV:

Tokyo Decadance – bringing the Underground up

Tokyo Decadance brings the Underground above Ground
Dance event mixes the unmixable

Tokyo Decadance was created by Adrien Le Danois of France

Deep underground, a myriad of weird and fantastical shapes move and groove to an eclectic beat and the sway of pulsating strobe lights. It’s Tokyo Decadance an underground (literally!) dance scene that is fast making its presence felt on the surface world.

Tokyo Decadance is an ecletic melting pot of underground cultures

There is no rhyme or reason to the costumes or themes in which the performers and participants come in. There are psychedelic psycho clowns, cat people who looked like they’ve escaped from a Japanese production of Broadway’s Cats, naughty nurses, light saber wielding cyborgs, Victorian Era vampires, dastardly devils, Gothic school girl Lolita’s, luscious hula girls, dancing doctors, and variety of types that defy labeling.

A cat and a devil carvorting

Tokyo Decadance started almost three years ago as the brainchild of Adrien Le Danois, a noted French Drag Queen of the Parisian scene. He moved to Japan in 2003 where he later created Tokyo Decadance. Decadance is a melting pot of various underground cultures in Japanese society. What was thought unmixable, Decadance mixed. Dark cyberpunks dance alongside genki nouveau geisha while outrageously-dressed anime geeks dance alongside suited salarymen.

The organizers describe the phenomenon as follows:

“Tokyo Decadance became the ‘rendez-vous’ of gothic, cyberpunk, fetish, manga heroine, lolitas, yamanbas, ko gyaru, drag queen, punk, tokyo jet-set and other partymonsters, but also salaryman and ‘normal people’ love Tokyo Decadance, especially because of its ENERGY!!!”

In its beginnings, Tokyo Decandance was influenced by the street styles of the various fashion subcultures of Tokyo. Now Tokyo Decadance is influencing those street styles.

Tokyo Decadance is not just a dance scene. There are number of performances at each of the shows running from fire shows, martial arts demos mixed with dance, theater, exotic dancing, and a little bondage to keep things interesting.

Tokyo Decadance has now become practically a worldwide event with shows taking place in a number of cities around the world. Decadance has been invited to perform in several distinguished venues such as the Enghein Center museum and the Salon of Pret a Porter in France.

Overall its a funtime to let oneself go and a great place to meet and/or get beaten by some interestingly unique people.
